We lived at Proosdijweg 57....
The little house we lived
in, still exists, but lots has changed over the years.
Way back then, when entering the house you found yourself
in a halfway. To the right was the living room and through
this room you got to the huge kitchen. In the kitchen
stood a white wooden table with wooden chairs. The
kitchen had an earthen floor. No carpeting, no floor tiles.
From the kitchen, stairs led you to the second floor. On
that floor were two bedrooms. One for mom and dad and one
for the girls. The boys slept in the attic, right under
the shingles. In wintertime it was freezing cold! We had
no blankets, so we covered ourselves with our coats,
which we would wear again the next day. We never had any mattresses. We used
straw bags to sleep on. After a while
these would go all flat. So we'd visit farmer Crijns who
lived opposite us and filled the straw bags with fresh
straw for 15 cents. That way we'd enjoy them again for at
least half a year and sleeping was a delight!
